Analytical Chemistry

The area of research of the Basile Group at the University of Wyoming is Analytical Chemistry with a focus on the application of Mass Spectrometry to analyze a variety of biological and environmental samples. Specifically, our research is aimed at developing rapid biological sample preparation techniques suitable for proteomic measurements that can be implemented in field-portable instrumentation. These techniques are based on the use of non-enzymatic steps to lyse/digest biological samples to a stage that is suitable for MS analysis. Our laboratory pioneered the use of microwave heating for non-enzymatic digestion of proteins at aspartic acid and disulfide bonds and Thermal Degradation/Digestion that reduce digestion times from hours to seconds.

Research conducted by the Basile Group also focuses on the development of broad-spectrum techniques, both methodology and instrumentation, for the analysis of complex mixtures in biological (metabolomics) and environmental (coal) samples. More information about our current research can be found in our group website.
