Mahadevan's research involves bioinformatics and genomics. He is interested in developing computational tools and algorithms to analyze biological data.  He is also interested in the comparative genomics of respiratory viruses such as adenoviruses to gain insight into their evolution and pathogenicity. He has also been involved in research involving the classification of bacteriophages using computational methods.
