研究领域
Viruses are intracellular parasites that have co-evolved with life for millions of years. Some viruses are the cause of common, and sometimes lethal, diseases in humans and animals. My laboratory is interested in how double-stranded DNA viruses (group I of the Baltimore classification) interact with the host cell and manipulate the host immune response to propagate and cause pathogenesis. In particular, we study poxviruses and herpesviruses as models to understand viral immune evasion and alteration of cellular signalling. These viruses have large coding capacity and display a wide range of strategies to interfere with the infected cell. Elucidating such strategies teaches us about the viral life cycle itself and the host anti-viral response, and has the potential to identify targets for anti-viral interventions and improve the rational design of viral vectors for vaccine and oncolytic therapies.
