研究领域
Dr Pfrang's research is focussed on the fate of atmospheric aerosols and their impact on air quality and climate change. Experimental studies using levitation and neutron scattering techniques are complemented by modelling work predicting kinetic behaviour and importance of atmospheric species. One of the key aims of Dr Pfrang's fellowship is to extend the rapidly growing interface between atmospheric chemistry and meteorology. To this end, he is collaborating with several colleagues at the Department of Meteorology. Recent research grants (~2.3 million since June 2007; ~1.3 million as PI) have been awarded to (i) explore ultrasonic levitation for atmospheric science (Royal Society and NERC), (ii) link Dr Pfrang's aerosol ageing research to Prof. Marston's aerosol formation studies (NERC), (iii) investigate N2O5 chemistry of monomolecular organic films (ISIS, Institut Laue-Langevin, ILL, Grenoble, France; see Reading Research News, ILL webpage and ILL News 50, p. 8) and (iv) study reactions of N2O5 with atmospheric aerosol levitated in laser Raman tweezers (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory).
