研究领域

Pedagogical Innovations. It is an old cliché, students aren’t what they used to be. They are usually performing multiple tasks at one time instead of reading textbooks isolated in a library cubicle. They may be working practice problems while at the same time looking some information up on Wikipedia with their Facebook page open in the background, and in the next moment checking out a video on YouTube that their friend just tweeted about. How do we use this ability to multi task and assimilate small bits of information from multiple sources to enhance the students learning in chemistry? We are working to develop and explore the application of podcasts, wiki, and networking in teaching Organic Chemistry. Laboratory Curriculum Development. There have been several successful integrations of research based laboratory curriculum into Organic Chemistry and the results in the improvement of students’ understanding of the concepts and practical experience have been very promising. The move to more inquiry and active learning pedagogy in undergraduate labs by using a research based laboratory curriculum has not been wide spread. The increased demand for well trained instructors and hands-on instrumentation needed to run a research based laboratory curriculum is often the deciding factor whether a chemistry program can implement the curriculum. Can experiments and curriculum be designed to allow Universities with limited resources or with large numbers of students implement a more problem oriented laboratory experience instead a “cookbook”?
