Dr. Sangal joined the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow as a postdoctoral research fellow in November 2008, and has been involved in a study characterising of a global collection of Shigella sonnei isolates by whole genome sequencing approaches and developed a SNP based rapid diagnostic assay for S. sonnei. He also worked on the characterisation of MRSA isolates from the intensive care unit of the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. Dr. Sangal was employed as an Anniversary Research Fellow at Northumbria University in September 2013 and continued working on genomic and phenotypic characterisation of C. diphtheriae strains. In addition, he has been working with Prof. Iain Sutcliffe within the Department and Prof. Michael Goodfellow at the Newcastle University on the whole genome sequencing and functional genomic analyses of Actinobacteria, including strains isolated from extreme environments, e.g., Atacama Desert. Dr. Sangal has been appointed as a Senior Lecturer in Cellular and Molecular Sciences since September 2016.
