Dr Julian Barwell trained in Medicine at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals in London (1991-1997: Distinction in Medicine and intercalated BSc in Basic Medical Sciences and Human Genetics). He was a junior doctor in South London and became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in 2000. He completed his PhD in familial breast cancer susceptibility in 2006. After finishing his Clinical Genetics training (2001-2007) at Guy's, St George's and the Royal Marsden from the University of London; he started as a consultant in Clinical Genetics in Leicester. He was the senior editor of the Royal College of Physicians five yearly update in Clinical Genetics in 2014 and is a senior author of the newly commissioned book Clinical Genetics at a Glance. He has been voted onto the United Kingdom Cancer Genetics Group Steering Committee and was awarded an honorary chair (professorship) by the University of Leicester in 2015
