Kenneth B. Roberts received a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy and a master of business administration degree in marketing from the University of Tennessee. He earned a PhD in health care administration from the University of Mississippi in 1975 and served as dean of the School of Pharmacy, executive director of the Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and professor of pharmacy administration at Ole' Miss from 1989 to 2000. Dr. Roberts has been the principal or co-investigator on more than 30 extramural grants and contracts, and has published over 100 articles and abstracts. He has authored or co-authored 12 books on the economics of pharmacy practice, managed care pharmacy services programs, management, and marketing pharmacy services. He has made more than 800 professional and scientific presentations throughout the United States and internationally. In 1998, he was recognized by the American College of Apothecaries as the nation's outstanding leader in pharmacy education. During his administration as dean at the University of Mississippi, the School of Pharmacy constructed more than 135,000 square feet of new research, academic and patient care facilities, which included state-of-the-science research laboratories, electronic classrooms and a 10,000-square-foot pharmaceutical care clinic and student health center pharmacy. Research programs at the School of Pharmacy increased extramural funding by almost 500 percent, to more than $11.4 million in fiscal year 1999. Dr. Roberts became dean of the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy in March 2000. Since that time, the College more than quadripled its endowment funding, total research funding rose from $4.5 million to almost $14 million, and NIH funding more than doubled. In 2002, the College received federal funding to establish a Center for Improving Medication-Related Outcomes, which focused on identifying specific causes of medication-related problems, educating health care professionals in effective management of these problems, as well as improving patient medication use and individual responsibility for their health through consumer education outreach. The College broke ground in December 2003 for a major expansion of its Center for Pharmaceutical Science and Technology (CPST). The $18 million, 20,000 square foot facility located at the University's Coldstream Research Campus will allow the CPST to manufacture sterile pharmaceuticals for use in Phase I and Phase II clinical trials and was positioned to serve as a catalyst for the development of pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities in the area. In addition to this state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, a new 286,000 square foot building for the academic and research programs in the College was constructed at a total cost of $165 million. With additional classroom facilities, the College expanded enrollment to meet the growing demand for pharmacists throughout the Commonwealth. Dr. Roberts was appointed to the Kentucky Innovations Commission in September 2000, and served as a member of the Kentucky Pharmacy Leadership Council and the Lexington-Fayette County Board of Health. He is recipient of the 2002 Professional Promotions Award from the Kentucky Pharmacists Association and the 2003 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy.
