Gary Mires is Dean of Medicine and Professor of Obstetrics at the University of Dundee. He is an Honorary Consultant Obstetrician at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School, Dundee. He obtained his MBChB and MD from the University of Dundee, is a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. His clinical interest is high risk pregnancy particularly the management of multiple pregnancy and pregnancy complicated by diabetes. His research interest is ‘the small baby’ particularly pre-term delivery, antecedent factors for intrauterine growth restriction, assessment of fetal growth and wellbeing and the consequences for long- term health of being born ‘small’. He sits on the UK Medical Schools Council, Scottish Board for Academic Medicine (BfAM), Scottish Government Professionalism and Excellence Group, NES Medical Advisory Working Group and the NES Strategy for Recruiting and Retaining Trainees in Scotland Group. He was chair of the Scottish Deans Medical Education Group and is currently chair NHS Education Scotland (NES) Regional ACT Group and Vice Chair of the International Medical University (IMU) Academic Council. He was the Medical Schools Council representative on the Selecting for Excellence Executive Group which published its report on widening participation in Medicine in 2014 and is currently the Medical Schools Council representative on the Academy of Medical Royal College Foundation Programme Committee. He has held several positions at the RCOG including Honorary Director of E-Learning and Editor in Chief of the RCOG StratOG.net online distance learning programme which is now the key educational on-line training resource for all UK trainees in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He contributed to several education initiatives at the RCOG including curriculum development and assessment as a Member of the RCOG Education and Curriculum Committees.
