In our group we are interested in the interaction between lasers and optical materials, primarily glass. In recent years our research has focused on the use of laser and optical techniques to create and characterize micro- and nanostructured materials. This is accomplished by exploiting laser-matter interactions that are confined to very small ((sub) micron-size) regions and/or very short (femtosecond) time scales. Under these conditions the laser intensity in the focus becomes very high and this results in permanent modification of the material.
