Light propagation in photorefractive media The interaction of light with photorefractive LiNbO3 and BaTiO3 is experimentally and theoretically investigated to enhance the understanding of soliton formation and information storage in self-defocusing media. New light controlled optical devices for future optical communications and computing systems will be developed using this knowledge. Laser frequency stabilisation and application Stabilisation of the frequency of visible lasers by saturated absorption spectroscopy is explored with the aim of improving the accuracy of optical frequency references used for metrology. These stable frequency sources are used to interferometrically measure concentrations of wanted and unwanted gases in the environment. Optical characterisation of light emitting quantum structures The optical properties of quantum dots and nanoparticles are experimentally and theoretically investigated to determine the key physical parameters that control their emission wavelengths. Of special interest is the enhancement of local light fields on the particles by surface plasmon resonances.
