Background

I have a strong background in the immune response to infection and diseases in both humans and animals. I studied Biotechnology (Hons) in Australia. During this degree I was lucky enough to be involved in a Bluetongue virus vaccine trial in sheep. This trial was conducted in a specialist infectious disease facility similar to AHVLA. The experience stimulated my interest to studying the immune system further.

In my PhD I examined how melanoma cells supress the immune system. I was the first to identify a link between activation of regulatory T cells and suppression of the immune system in patients with melanoma. I have subsequently conducted research as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in a variety of areas of immunology including drug development for rheumatoid arthritis, pneumococcal vaccines in children, resistance to mastitis in dairy cattle, and vaccines for R. microplus (cattle tick).
