1976-77 Research Assistant, Department of Biological Science, Durham University 1983-86 Ridley Post Doctoral Research Fellow, Department of Civil Engineering, Newcastle University. Working on the treatment of coke oven effluent using activated carbon in partnership with British Steel. 1986-92 Research Associate and Senior Research Associate, Department of Civil Engineering, Newcastle University. Assessing the environmental impact of Hydro-electric power releases from a Hydro-electric power station 1992-95 Lecturer in Chemical Engineering, Newcastle University. Setting up short courses, teaching environmental aspects of Chemical Engineering to undergraduates and Course Director and principle lecturer for post graduate MSc in Clean Technology which I set up in 1993.
