Research efforts in the Maggard laboratories are focused on novel investigations into the syntheses, structures and properties of mixed-metal niobate, tantalate, molybdate, and vanadate compounds, as illustrated above. These efforts have focused on the preparation of novel structures and compositions via new nanoparticle-mediated synthesis, flux synthesis, and hydrothermal synthesis techniques. These crystalline structures include two types of metal cations that can be selected in order to target new investigations into ordered or disordered metal-cation arrangements, metastability at low temperatures, electronically-driven phase transitions, optical bandgap sizes that can be tuned across the range of visible-light energies, and photocatalytic activity for oxygen and/or hydrogen production.
