Dr. West is a professor of medicine and assistant dean of research for clinical trials at Dalhousie University. He is also the director of the Nova Scotia Fabry Disease Clinic. Dr. West is a past president of the Canadian Society of Nephrology.

Dr. West is principal investigator of the Canadian Fabry Disease Initiative, a multi-centre national study of enzyme replacement therapy in Fabry Disease.
