The focus of my research is to find a cure for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD is the leading cause of vision and blindness in the Western world. It is an inflammatory chronic progressive eye disease with damage to retinal pigment epithelium cells and photoreceptors. Cell-based therapies aimed at replacing damaged retinal cells remain a potential strategy for a successful treatment. The aim of my project is to induce the differentiation of human embryonic stem cells into retinal photoreceptors by using a combination of synthetic medical compounds.
