吴强，男，博士，中国科学技术大学管理学院教授（二级），博士生导师，中国科学技术大学第十一届学术委员会委员。科研工作集中于科技管理和学术评估领域，首次提出“W指数”、“颠覆性成果系列评价指标”、“马修迹象”、“引用个人展示”、"编委会学术指数"、“合并预印本引用”、"论文加权评价指数"等具有较高理论价值和较强应用前景的新概念和新方法，学术成果不断发表在JASIST、Scientometrics、Information Processing & Management、Journal of Informetrics、Journal of Documentation、Journal of Information Science 等顶级刊物上，在国内外产生了较大反响，为推动科学计量学与信息计量学的发展做出了一定的贡献。提出的W指数在国际学术评价领域得到一定程度的应用并按照姓氏被命名为Wu-index。国际著名经济研究数据库RePEc/IDEAS每个月都会采用Wu-index对注册的6万多名经济管理学家（包括诺贝尔经济学奖获得者）进行排名，从2008年8月至2024年5月已经连续公布190份月度排名。世界著名学术机构英国物理学会（IOP）对W指数进行了专门报道，题目是"What's your Wu-index ?"，美国艺术与科学院院士、麻省理工学院Glenn Ellison教授已经撰写学术论文“How does the market use citation data?
