刘锦涛2004年获中国科学技术大学物理学学士，2011年获美国匹兹堡大学物理学博士，2011-2012年在美国匹兹堡大学计算与系统生物系从事博士后研究，2012-2017年在美国加州大学圣地亚哥分校从事博士后研究，2017年起任清华大学医学院及生命科学联合中心研究员、博士生导师。他主要从事细菌群体方面的研究，发展了全新的生物膜培养及观测方法，并对生物膜的动态行为进行了深入的研究，在国际上首次阐明了生物膜生长的动力学特点，发现了生物膜内细菌相互合作与竞争的机制。他的研究成果已发表于Nature 、Science 、Cell 等国际学术期刊，并被多家国际知名学术刊物及大众媒体广泛报道。
